Clear Blue Skies

This has been a great week for the subject of “Sky”.   The weather has been changing, so lots of blue sky, fluffy white clouds as well as storm clouds have all been rolling past my house.   There was also a “blue moon” recently so that was perfect timing.  If you had asked me a couple weeks ago what a blue moon was I wouldn’t have known, but since then I’ve found out it is what the second full moon in a month is called, and not because the moon looks blue, although I do think it would be pretty cool if the moon looked blue for a night or two.

I took lots of pictures this week but I am most excited about the night shots.  I actually had to get out of my comfort zone and use the manual mode on my camera.   I know the night shot is not magazine worthy by any stretch of the imagination (none of them are) but I’m learning to get out there and try some different things with my camera and for that I am very pleased and excited.

I hope you enjoy the “SKY” shots below.

Our subject for next week is FAMILY.
As always, thanks for looking!

What was I thinking?

What was I thinking?  Did I seriously commit myself to doing a WEEKLY photo blog?  A week is such a short period of time, why would I do that to myself?   Okay, now that I have the whiny over with, let’s get down to business.   The subject for this week is “bed” and it is as wide open as the subject of “let’s eat” was last week, and quite frankly just as hard to photograph.   I have had lots of ideas but nothing that I can really capture in pixels.   So my pictures this week are sparse and probably not my best but hey, you get what you pay for and, huh umm, it’s free!!!!   :)   I hope you enjoy.

Our bed

Rileigh’s bed – well actually it’s a bed we bought for Rileigh that she has NEVER slept in (not even for a nap) but at least Cassie (our cat) has used it.

The guest bed – with the quilt my Granny handstitch just for me.  It’s a double wedding ring with a scallop edge.  No machine sewing on that quilt!

And last but not least, and my favorite picture for this week, Rileigh’s REAL bed.  I think I like this because of the angle and the way you are looking straight back into the crate.

And this weeks challenge subject is SKY.  Another wide-open subject -LOL!

As always, thanks for looking and please share by blog with others who might be interested in looking at the pictures or better yet playing along with the weekly challenges.

Let’s eat

For a subject as everyday, like 3 or more times a day, as eating, this was certainly a hard one for me to come up with ideas for snapping pictures.   A few things floated through my mind but nothing really stuck.  Then I realized I was having lunch with a group of friends for one of their birthdays and it would be the perfect place to snap a few pictures of what I knew would be some georgeous plates of food.  I was not disappointed.   I can’t really decide on a favorite this week so I will just show you the pictures and see if you can pick a favorite.   By the way, each plate was delicious according to the person eating it, I know mine certainly was delicious.  Happy birthday Melinda!!!!

And a little something to wash it all down with

The “trick” to last weeks bottled water picture was that the bottles are actually lying down, not standing on a shelf.   If you go back and look you can see the air bubbles on the side of the bottle instead of the top.

Next weeks subject is “bed”.   I love my bed but I don’t think this is going to be an easy subject.

Thanks for reading.

Refreshing Water

Cool, clear, clean refreshing water!   We play in it, bathe in it, drink it, washing things in it, look out over it longingly…..yes, water is a wonderful and amazing thing.   Water can make us feel better pretty much every time we come in contact with it.

The possibilities for photographing water are almost as endless as the ways we use water, but I am, afterall, limited in my ability, my time and my access (no big ocean outside my window, you know).   Once I put my thinking cap on I did come up with some ideas though.

The first thing I thought of to photograph was bottled water.  I don’t really know why that came to mind first but it did and this is the result:

It’s a little tricky though.  Can you guess what the secret to this picture is?  Leave a comment with your guess and I’ll let you know next week how many and who guessed correctly.

This next picture was inspired by Facebook.  Can you imagine that, FB is helping with my photo blog!   You just never know where ideas will come from.

What’s summertime without a little run through the water hose.   Yea, I know, most kids these days have no idea what it’s like to play in the water in their own backyard.  But most of you reading my blog will remember the “good ole days”, also know as the “dark ages” to kids these days.   LOL

Next up is a little water fall action.

It’s pretty and all but the following picture is my favorite of all the water pictures I captured this week.

I love the green color, the kind of pinkish color of the water from the setting sun, along with the reflection of the retaining wall in the water, just beautiful!

I have one more bonus picture for you this week.  It does still pertain to water but not like my other pictures.

A man was fishing where I was taking pictures and caught this beautiful 17″ bass.   I’m so glad he was putting him back for the next person to catch again someday.

So on to another week of photography.   Drum roll please…the subject for next week is “Let’s Eat” – Wow, now that could be anything!

Thanks for looking!

Cooking, really?

Honestly, I’m not much of a cook.   Yes, I can follow a recipe and usually get good results, and there are a few things that my mom taught me to make without a recipe (dressing and cornbread to name a couple) but I don’t really consider that being much of a cook.   Now my two sisters – they are the cooks in the family!   My oldest, well, she can pretty much cook anything you want her to, and she doesn’t necessarily need a recipe.   Her husband is pretty good in the kitchen as well.  My other sister (the middle child) makes great pies, candies and cookies, which to me takes a real talent, especially certain candies.

All that to say I didn’t have much of an idea for the subject of “cooking” this week.   I took a couple pictures of my brother-in-law’s cooker-grill-thingie and they were okay.

Then I decided to take some pictures of my gas stove top burner.  It is, after all, what really cooks my food, huh?   This is the first house I have lived in that had a gas stove.  It’s been an adjustment but after 14 years I might be getting the hang of it.  Just don’t ask me about the smoke detector going off the other week and freaking out the dog.  I’ve noticed she still gets a bit nervous when I turn on the oven.

And so, here’s my cooking photo

What do you think?  I would love to here your comments.

P.S. I almost forgot – the subject for next week is water.

Happy 50th!

This is the 50th post for my blog!   Yea me!   I didn’t know when I started this if I would keep it going or not. And, as you know, I did take a bit of a sabbatical.   I’m not sure I learned anything so maybe it was just a vacation.

I also wanted to share that I have found and adapted a new weekly photo challenge for myself.  I was checking out some blogs that I don’t specifically subscribe to but that I watch occasionally to see what is happening on them.   They are mostly food blogs and since I’m SUCH a good cook, I don’t really need to subscribe to them.   If you know me, you can quit laughing now.  If you don’t know me personally, trust me, I’m no cook!

Soooo, anyway – one of the blogs had a daily photo challenge for the month of August which got me to thinking about how much I miss my photo challenges.  I decided to adapt their list from days to weeks, deleting some to make it finish up at the end of the year.  And Waaa-Laaa – a new challenge begins!

I set some rules up for myself.  Here are the basics if anyone wants to follow along either on their own or I would love for you to share you pictures and/or comments below.  On Friday I will draw a subject out of the “pot” and post it here on the blog for everyone.  Sometime before or on the following Friday I will post my photo and blog about how it came about, how difficult it was to capture, etc.   If the post is early in the week (not likely), I will post again on Friday to announce the subject for the following week for anyone that is following along.  This past Friday I drew out my subject for this week – wouldn’t you know it’s “cooking”.  Well, I wanted a challenge now didn’t I?

Wish me luck and see you in a few days!

Kim

Remember Me?

Do you see what she can see?

Seems like eons ago that I posted anything.    I’m not sure why but I just haven’t been very motivated lately, about anything.  Whether it’s photography or blogging or cleaning my house, I just can’t seem to get it together.   I think it has to do with the heat and humidity around here.  It really zaps my energy.  So, I’ve been doing what absolutely had to be done (semi-cleaning the house, working, etc.) and not much of anything else.    I’ve been thinking about picking back up on my blog for a while now so hopefully you will start seeing more of what’s happening in my little part of the world.

A little update on the photo challenge I did last year, Shutterboo decided not to host a photo challenge this year.   :(    I’m disappointed because it really did challenge me subject-wise and time-wise.   I haven’t been able to find another photo challenge that appeals to me for this year so that’s that I guess.    Anyway, I guess you will get to see some pictures from my everyday life.  Hopefully they won’t be too boring.   And in the meantime I will be stalking flickr to see if I can find something interesting to copy.

Just to get things rolling here are a few of my favorite pictures from over the last few months.  Enjoy!   (In no particular order)

Kim

before

After

Our renovated deck – now that could have been a blog all by itself but I won’t worry you with the details.  I’m just enjoying the end result.

My nephew graduated!  We are all so proud of him!

You knew there would be more of her, now didn’t you.  I can’t help it, she is just so cute!  Spoiled – but cute!

Purple flower with water droplets.

Found a frog in our bathroom, on the toilet!!!!  Where the heck do those things come from?  Oh wait, never mind, I really don’t want to think about the possibilities that could happen.  Moving on…

We spent a week on Dauphin Island.  That place is an awesome getaway if you just want to relax and play in the sand.

Saw this beautiful flower in our neighbor’s yard at the beach.  I’m not sure what it is though.

This is not the sharpest picture but I like it.  To me, it looks like one you would see in a magazine about wildlife.   I think they are egrets but I’m not sure.

This guy was just standing on the beach, in the middle of all those people.  Just doing his own little thing I guess.

We took Rileigh to the beach with us.  She traveled very well for her first really long trip.   She spent most of the time asleep on our lap.   She looks so sweet in this picture.

And one last picture…

Doesnt’ that look delicious?   And can you believe the picture was taken with my phone?   Cameras on phones sure have come a long way!

Hope to see you soon!

*POOF*

Did you see that?   There it went!   Poof!   Gone!   What, you ask?   That month of my life that just flew by before I could accomplish anything!!   Ever felt that way?   Boy, did it ever seem true for me over the past few weeks.   Things are starting to get back to the way they were at work and with the cooler temps coming around maybe life at home will slow down too.   It’s hard for me to believe that it has been nearly 5 weeks since I last posted – WOW!     I’m back though and here’s what I’ve been snapping pictures of over the past few weeks.

First, I’ve continued to contribute to Shutterboo’s weekly challenge (some a little late but oh well) and here’s what I’ve submitted lately.

Week 37:  Triangle

Week 38 Game

Week 39 Green

Week 40 Technology -what would we do without our cell phones and texting?

Week 41 Traffic – no I didn’t go play in traffic – just close to it!  hehehe

Second, there were a few things around the house that caught my eye and I couldn’t resist a little snap.

Found that in my kitchen window one day after work.  I have no idea how it got there and I don’t know if I want to know.  Praying mantis’ just look creepy, huh?   It’s gone now thanks to my hubby.

This was a couple weeks ago.  I think the hummers have officially moved on now.  The yellow-jackets were on the feeder yesterday.

Then, of course, there is always family stuff that finds its way in front of my camera.

This beautiful cake was for my sisters 50th birthday!   Happy b-day again Karen!  Pretty and sweet, just like her (well most of the time, we are sisters you know!).   And thanks Pam for doing such a great job on it!

And one more –

You knew that was coming, didn’t you?    I just had to include a picture of one of the reasons I have so little spare time lately!    Cute and loveable, yet so time consuming!  Don’t care, I wouldn’t trade her for NOTHING!

I know it’s been short and yet full of pictures, but hopefully soon time will slow down long enough for me to jump back on the wagon and do more than just hang on for the ride.

Happy Snapping!

Kim

P.S. If you noticed the different font sizes in the blog, just pretend like they are all the same.  I don’t have time to figure it out!    LOL

Happiness

For me happiness is spending time with family and friends, happiness is watching the antics of little Ms. Rileigh, happiness is visiting my parents on their farm, or being outdoors, or relaxing and reading a good book…..wow, seems it doesn’t take much to make me happy huh?   What better way to photograph happiness than to snap a picture of some beautiful cupcakes made for a sweet friend’s birthday celebration dinner with the girls!   They were made by a friend, for a friend and enjoyed at a celebration dinner – that sums up happiness!   Therefore my submission for Shutterboo’s challenge to photograph “happiness”.

This post will have to be short and sweet (get it sweet – cupcakes – sweet, LOL).     I’m way too busy to spend time playing with any of my “toys” right now including my camera and my photo blog.    But just to catch you up since my last post.   Subject of “abstract”   – sorry, totally wimped out on that one.   I feel bad but not horrible, after all it is the only week I have missed since starting this challenge and it was bound to happen at some point in time.     The following week the subject was “yellow”.   I almost missed that challenge but at the last minute came up with this little cutie.

It’s creative in subject but that’s about all.   But some weeks you just gotta let it go and play a little.

Next week’s subject is triangle.  That should be interesting!  Pray for me to have more play time this week, after all everybody needs a little play time to keep them happy!!!!

Hope you find happiness everywhere you look.

Kim

Happy Blogiversary to ME!!!!

I can hardly believe it’s been a year since I started this blog.   The format has changed since that first post but it’s still all about the pictures for me.   I can’t say I’m learning and improving by leaps and bounds but I am still plugging away at it.

To be honest, sometimes this blog seems a bit like a chore rather than fun and games.   Other times it is a blast!   I still love taking pictures and I am so very grateful for a specific subject each week.  It pushes me to think and be creative, but more importantly it makes me want to improve my skills – not just snap a good or okay picture.

I’ve had my ups and downs with the blog, even considered shutting it down on more than one occasion.   Then I force myself to take a few pictures for the photo challenge and before you know it, I’m all excited about it again.   Not so much the blog itself really but just taking pictures.   I know that I will NEVER be a professional photographer and I really don’t want to be a professional.   But I do want to be able to take a picture that I am proud of and can call my own.

Okay, enough of the jibber-jabber.

I’ve been a little behind on my submissions to Shutterboo’s photo challenge but hope to be back in the swing of things now.   Week 32’s subject was “lines” and quite frankly I just drew a blank (get it? blank line, hahaha)  when it came to ideas.   Finally I settled on this submission, late but nevertheless completed.

While I’m not just busting at the seams with happiness over it, it works and I can call that week done.  I actually wanted to photograph a line of people waiting to get in the bathroom but just couldn’t seem to pull that one off .  Oh well.

Next up for Week 33 was “urban”, again blank.  I must be going through a photo slump.   It would have been nice to venture into downtown Nashville for a little random photo shoot but that didn’t work out.   So I settled for taking a picture of the hospital building I work in.   I wasn’t crazy about the idea but then I took the picture and

loved it!   The symmetry makes me happy (that’s how I scrapbook too – symmetrical) and the additional reflection in the glass adds to the symmetry making me love this picture!

Week 34 is “abstract” – what?  How in the world do you photograph abstract?   Well this certainly will be challenging.   Wish me luck!  Talk to you next issue!

In celebration of my blogivesary here are a few of my favorite pictures from over the past year!  Hope you enjoy the look back

Kim

Gravel Road – my first upload and still a favorite!

still love my splash cup too!!!

You know I had to put one of my Rileigh girl in here!!!!

And what would the year have been like without our little friend the cicada?
